Biblical Perspective of Estate Planning
"A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children."
Proverbs 13:22
As a Christian attorney, Mark S. Roberts is committed to providing estate planning according to biblical principles. Though the Bible is not often consulted for financial planning, it does in fact contain instructions and wisdom to guide one in providing for their family; "wisdom along with a good inheritance is good, and an advantage to those who see the sun." Ecclesiastes 7:11
The Bible provides many examples of righteous men and women who made provision for their families, while remembering that "the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world, and those who dwell therein." Psalms 24:1. In Haggai 2:8 the Lord reminds us that "the silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of hosts"; while the fruits of our labor ultimately belong to the Lord, He has nonetheless given us the responsibility of acting as wise stewards of the talents given to each of us, Matthew 25:14-28.
In addition to teaching us that financial planning is prudent and wise, God's Word also instructs us that a good plan involves careful consideration and hard work; "an inheritance gained hurriedly at the beginning will not be blessed in the end", Proverbs 20:21.
God's Word clearly demonstrates that His will is for us to exercise stewardship over what He has given us ... our assets, and our children. The wise man "knows [his] end, and knows how transient [we are]." Psalms 39:4. Planning your estate, with your end in mind, should be a process of love and joy as you prepare to provide for your family as if you were still here.
